EU supports weapons tracking system iTrace

Summary: 29 September 2014, Brussels - The uncontrolled spread of small arms and light weapons and their ammunition sustains conflicts, exacerbates violence, fuels crime and terrorism, undermines political and economic development and has already caused millions of victims around the world.

As part of its efforts to tackle this issue, the EU funds the iTrace project (Council Decision 2013/698/CFSP). It provides policy makers with precise, verified information on transfers of diverted small arms and light weapons (SALW), larger conventional weapons and ammunition. The project, which is implemented by Conflict Armament Research, combines an extensive programme of field investigations in conflict-affected countries with a powerful public access weapons tracking database.

iTrace is designed to serve as an independent monitor for the implementation of international arms control agreements. This includes the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons and the Arms Trade Treaty. The EU supports the iTrace project in the context of the EU Strategy to combat illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition which aims to make legal international arms transfers more responsible and transparent.

The iTrace website will be released on 27 September 2014. It will plot weapons data collected by Conflict Armament Research’s field investigation teams on an online world map.
