So what's the issue? Time. People only sacrifice resources like time if they receive something in return. You see the very 'engaged' Pirates who now leave the party? They invested their time because they expected a return. Something like a position or function, most likely a seat in the EU-Parliament or at least a comfortable position in it's periphery.

What you propose sounds good in theory, but learning to code doesn't help me very much. I make more by understanding the business and telling coders in India what to do instead of doing it myself (even though I'd love to).

coding is writing. if u can afford a secretary, then u wouldnt type ur emails urself anymore and so mebody would read u all mails u receive... ...an indian programmer is a remote secretary that needs to translate ur communicated intensions on top of that...  

 

The effort necessary to produce good code for me would come at an immense cost. I am sure you will come to understand that in a not to distant future.

u dont need to be goethe or lawyer to write poems or contracts. even basic writing will get u somewhere, especially in current times with lots of easy APIs and easy to re-use open source code

 

What I am trying to get at is that we should maybe first try to find a way to liberate pirates from the everyday shackles that force them to concentrate their time in such a way and not another.

I sincerely applaud your point of view. The only criticism would be time. I am also loaded to the brim with way to many projects and would not dare to take on anything in addition. How can we bring people to carve out the necessary time to actually engage? I wonder who would be the ideal candidate to court for learning and finally contributing to the ongoing projects.
To me, the value proposition doesn't really add up. I came to realize that I simply can't pay the opportunity cost (saying no to job/promotion/degree/girlfriend/family) without feeling shitty about myself.

in our times, stop wasting time for a useless promotion or degree would be the first thing to do and engage in "open science" instead and become more entrepreneurial. It has never been easier then in our times.
Done properly, a job as a programer or even other technical professions can be combined with contributing to open source easily. Just start releasing "mini libraries" which follow the unix philosophy of doing things, which you code anyway in order to get your job related tasks done.
And if you work in an environment, where this is strongly discouraged, think about switching jobs (which is also some kind of political vote) :-)

Thos people who do this can inspire and lead the way for others...
I personally started out in corporate jobs, switchted to the startup scene, then switched to freelancing, then switched to "Location Independent Income Freelancing", then created my own meetup group with like minded people and now trying to get some kind of "open agency" started, which operates on the foundations of "gitter.im, github.com, waffle.io" and all participants will work together based on contracts + we toy around with ways of creating "educational programs" to teach people programming FOR FREE, enabeling them to hopefully soon afterwards take "tasks" from our projects and earn money with it.... that way, they can even earn for learning :-)

 

However, in the long run, I remain hopeful that I can restructure my life to include more open source and pirate party work.

i stumble upon DISQUS more and more often and i see a lot of activity is
there.
It has been created by the people behind "Stack Overflow" and it can be used
on any website, allowing users to communicate with each other using their
existing account/identity.

It doesnt have so many rules to structure the discussion, but some basics,
but it has a lot of traction, so maybe it would be nice to also keep in
mind, that those kind of plattforms should be able to integrate with d!sco
too, at least on a very basic level :-)

...that would immediately give a lot of input to everything that tries to
use d!sco :-)
