Hi Henk,
if the date is now fixed on the 14th/15th of December I'd like to register. But where do I do it? I couldn't find a place in the pad or a link to a place for registration.
And do you also offer accomodation? Or have any recommendations there?
I could also offer a presentation of an idea of mine which is a concept for a liquid representative democracy and could work as an introduction on democracy concepts. I'd really like to run my idea with a wider audience and discuss and improve or finally reject it.
If you are interested, I could prepare something more to give you an idea of what I've been thinking about.
Best regards,
Martina

Hi all,
Thank you very much for your enthusiasm, it is very inspiring for making
this work.
We want to make the date for the conference permanent. I would like to
ask everybody to let us know if you can come at the 14th and the 15th,
you can register here:
http://piratepad.be/p/PiratePartyPolitics_conference.
We got room for 60 persons at the Landhuis, so the space is limited.
There is a possibility to change to a bigger location but not on a short
notice so please register as fast as you know you can be there.
The pad is also the place where you can contribute to the program of the
conference. We hope to have the program, speakers and other contributors
to the conference, finalized two weeks before the conference, we want to
keep parts of the program open for things which come into mind last
minute.
Also you can sign up as a volunteer to help organising the fist
International Pirate Party Politics Conference.
I agree with the proportions as suggested by Thomas, 20/80, which would
mean 6 external speakers.
@Justus, offcourse you stay connected, the more the merrier.
Hope to see you the 14th and 15th in Maastricht.
Greetings,
Henk

Hi Thomas
I hope it's okay if I stay connected to this as well, even though I am
not from NRW. As a Dutch speaker and resident of Lower Saxony (which
borders on the NL too) I try to stay involved in Dutch-German Pirate
relations, and from a German POV Maastricht still is within easy driving
distance from Hanover.
kind regards

Hello everyone,
First of all, thanks to the Dutch Pirates for helping settle the
location and dates. I apologize that October didn't work out, by the
time we had a confirmation I was being run over with a new work
project and a new office space to move to.
December 14-15 sounds very good to me. Does this work for Luxemburg
as well?
Since the initiative/idea originally came from a few Pirate Party
Politics days we've experimented with in Belgium, I would be glad to
pitch in some of the original framework ideas and things we
discovered doing it ourselves:
* "Strictly Pirate Politics". One of the reasons we've started to
organize this, was an abundance of side-tracks in the regular
operation of the PPBE. It is easy to get stuck in internal
regulations or various ideas that are difficult to merge with
the political program of the PP. Of course all of that is
necessary and interesting too, it just proved to be too
distracting at times. So, a PPP could/should/would be strictly
about political ideas and topics. This can be everything from a
historical perspective to innovative political ideas to ... By
contrast, things we tried to avoid were: PR/marketing/slogans,
anything regarding internal regulations, political "strategy"
stuff, etc. With most people that are interested in doing a talk
or speech, it is easy to find a topic that is political that
they would be willing to talk about. In this sense, talking
about 3D printing in general isn't political in itself, but this
speech <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUEvRyemKSg> definitely
is (and it mentions 3D printing).
* "No pressure". Having to explain and discuss political ideas is
already very challenging for most of us. To make this easier, we
made sure there was no expected outcome and we kept the invitees
to people that could be trusted to keep the atmosphere calm
enough for a decent, intelligent conversation. There must be a
lot of room for failure and/or experiment, Pirate Politics is
often about thinking outside of the box.
* "20/80 time". 20% presentations/talks/speeches, 80% discussions
and breaks. In-depth conversations tire people out and two days
is long in that regard. Keeping a low pace in the number of
topics helps a lot with that. Of course, having a lot of room
for discussion also doesn't make anyone feel like the people
giving the speeches/talks are taking over the weekend. In all
practicality, this would mean a maximum of 4 or 5 "topic cycles"
per day, if you allow about 1 hour per topic
(speech+discussion). Of course, with 60 people it would be
advisable to split the group into at least 3 sub-groups. This
would allow for 12 "topic cycles" per day.
* "20/80 speakers". 20% external speakers (people that don't
self-identify as Pirate), 80% Pirates. The idea here is that a
few external speakers (and possibly a few "famous" Pirates) help
to raise the quality level/expectation of the weekend. On the
other hand, the goal is to allow Pirates to practice their
political speech, so it's important to actually allow for a lot
of that.
* "Invite". Both for speakers and attendees, it is very important
that you personally invite people that you /want/ to be there.
This will make them feel honored and increase the overall
quality of the event.
I am a bit scared to see that the idea has now expanded to include
the entire PPEU. I'm not so sure this is wise, as it will put a lot
more pressure and difficulty towards the organisation than is
strictly necessary. Of course, every Pirate is welcome, but the
focus has been Benelux+North Rhine-Westphalia (essentially anybody
within "easy" driving distance).
Anyway. On a practical level we could get started if we take
December 14-15 as final. The most sensible thing would seem to:
1. Set up a registration page. Pirates may indicate their interest
in participating there and I would ask them their PP affiliation
(country or region), political topics that interest them,
privacy preferences and potential "talks" they would be willing
to give. (If there is an overwhelming interest, we may need to
curate the participants a bit, to make sure there is a good
balance in origin, etc.) I'd be happy to set something like that
up in the coming week.
2. Ask for/assign "volunteer curators" that could help us find the
most interesting guest speakers. I'm estimating (based on 60
participants splits 3 groups, 2 days and the 20/80 "rules") that
an /absolute maximum/ of 6 external speakers is required to have
a wonderful weekend. That would make it about 1 per
participating country.
I'm sooo happy that this is still happening!
Cheers,
Thomas Goorden, PPBe

Hello,
The 14/15 december indeed looks like a better date, it's a shame
to settle for a double date for the germans. I made the
reservation at the same place (again, provisionally). Can we all
agree?
Martina, there are already some directions mentioned in the pad
as for themes. I think it's a good idea to invite several
speakers and/or create workshops, perhaps it 's smart to
elaborate on the themes only after we invited the speakers and
are sure of their presence. Is there anybody with ideas on this?
We recently had a crypto-party at the same place, with a dutch
privacy activist. I'm actually not sure if this kind of workshop
is useful for pirates (most of us might already have the skills)
but if there is animo, i would be happy to set it up.
I might be able to arrange a speaker about quantummechanics
(allthough it's not directly a pp theme, it might be an
interesting mindbend for new ideas) and 3d printing (in its
widest sense, e.g. the political/ commercial implications).
If you are interested, please let me know, i will try to get it
arranged. And/or: are there other ideas about speakers and
workshops?
greetings,
nine

Hi there,
I also want to thank you for organising an
international conference in Maastricht. As Justus already
wrote, the German GA at that week-end would make it
impossible for me to come, so I would prefer it, if you
could settle on a different date.
As we German Pirates also need to finish the program for the
EU election 2014 until the start of December, I'd suggest
that we'd rather work on how to work together to bring
our Common Programme into existence and into the hearts and
minds of the European people. We could build up European
action and work groups on European topics like PRISM and
TEMPORA, share contact details and information about
campaigning Pirates and work on common campaigns.
But we could also have workshops and lectures on Pirate
politics, deeping our common political understanding.
Is there already a general plan about the topics of the
Conference?
If you cannot or would not change the date, I hereby suggest
to find a time and place for an additional conference,
perhaps sometime in January, to work on the issues I
mentioned above.
I would be very glad, if the Dutch Pirates would join us
there, too.
Best regards,
Martina

Hello all,
I would like to thank PPNL to start this initiative.
International cooperation is very important for the
Pirate movement and any initiative to support this is
just awesome! So it's great to see PPNL become active
again in this area. This weekend there is the PPEU
program group meeting in Athens. I doubt if all work to
towards a joined EU program will be done after this
conference. I would like to propose to continue the work
on the proposed conference in the Netherlands. Setting
the date for the Maastricht conference would maybe be
better a little later than in the proposal. Maybe 14/15
dec. This would allow enough time between the two events
to prepare the later. And it would be darn right cool
that the Pirates would have their own Maastricht treaty
on how the EU should work.

hello everyone,
We'd like to propose a new date to meet up with a
group of
international Pirate-party members in Maastricht.
The idea for the
last meet, to help spark debate around political
matters, we think
should remain unchanged. An agenda for the weekend
and organisational
specifications can be elaborated on in the working
document for the
cancelled meet:
http://piratepad.be/p/PiratePartyPolitics_conference
For now we made a (provisional) reservation at 'the
Landhuis', an open
community squad in Maastricht that that can hold up
to around 60
people. We reserved the place for saturday the 30th
of november and
sunday the first of december. We can either use one
or both days. We
added a date-choice at the top of the pad, either
that and/or this
mailing (reply all) might be used to see which date
is preferred by
everyone. As for NL, either day or both days are
alright with us.
We'd like to propose that all of us send out
invitations through all
used communications channels. In that way, everybody
who might like to
join, has the opportunity to reserve a place. In
that way, we have the
best guarantee that the meet remains open.
For information about the location:
http://hetlandhuis.org/wordpress/172-2/ (the site
is in dutch)
please email us if you have any questions, comments,
requests:
henk.heslinga AT piratenpartij.nl
<mailto:henk.heslinga AT piratenpartij.nl> or
qualia AT piratenpartij.nl
<mailto:qualia AT piratenpartij.nl> (Nienke Hoekstra)
We hope to be looking forward to an open,
experimental and succesful meet,
Henk Heslinga (general organisation for NL)
Nienke Hoekstra (local facilitation Maastricht;
location, meals,
sleepover, etc.)
