Marc and the Piraten and MetaGovt folks,

Many thanks for inviting me to talk.  The recording is two hours long!  If you dip in, be sure to find a spot where I am being asked questions.  Here's the link:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/107231073/AG%20Meinungsfindungstool/Session%20recordings/Mumble-2012-11-10-21-15-58-mumble.piratenpartei-nrw.de-Mixdown.ogg

I can't say I was very articulate, but I think I got what I wanted to say across.  The group was small and friendly.  Several of the ideas behind InterMix were new to them and they seemed to enjoy something so novel coming their way.  At the end several of the attendees expressed interest in being on the InterMix steering committee.  When InterMix opens for its test phase later this month, I will post the link to join as a member of the InterMix Steering Committee here on Metagov and the Meinungsfindungstool list of the Pirates Party.

One thing the questions made me realize is that there is a certain ambiguity about the InterMix Voices of Humanity in that they are not groups, but rather automatic recombinations.  For instance a San Francisco Bay Area Voice of Women can be constructed by setting the InterMix discussion filters, but the input will have come in from multiple groups, and so the messages may not be centered on Bay Area Women's issues.  I bet we can fix something up to handle this.

Another thing for the future when InterMix has a way of structuring topics, which it does not have yet, is to figure out how can we assure that a person's article on a certain topic doesn't have to be posted separately in each group the person belongs to.

Also I learned from Pietro about the idea of a Pareto Front.  If applied to the InterMix dual rating scale, for interest and approval, the Pareto front plots messages on the two scales and is the string of outermost candidates.  Here is an example from wikipedia where the lower score is best, so it is the innermost candidates that are of interest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Front_pareto.svg.  Down the road I will want to look at ways to use the Pareto front to select messages for further consideration.

InterMix is set up to elect messages written by individuals.  As such, my hope is that InterMix will be good for building a broad consensus on general terms.  In discussion it was pointed out that there are other approaches where a group cooperates to create a message.  These latter approaches are clearly better for handling a complex topic in a detailed way.  Perhaps we should think about ways to meld the two methods so a group can decide which way is more appropriate in a given circumstance.

Thanks again and I recommend others to take the opportunity that the German Pirate Party has generously created for us here.
