I originally joined the Pirates because the digital issues and the fight for freedoms and fundamental rights appealed to me. As an IT graduate with a soft spot for data protection, I was thrilled when I realized: Hey, with the Pirates I can join right away, every idea is discussed equally and spontaneously founded teams take care of the implementation. Wow! I had never experienced politics like that before.  My goal was also to be present at a demo one day, maybe to get involved a little bit. So I joined in 2011.

 

Already the following year, in 2012, we founded our own district association, where I was part of the board for several years, also in the role of 1st chairwoman.
In addition, I was active as an appointed data protection officer for the state association of the Pirates of Baden-Württemberg for several years and also took care of the training of our members nationwide.

As 2013 in Luxemburg the PPEU was founded, I watched the signing excitedly
In the 2015 mayoral election in Ulm, my district association and me, achieved 4.8 percent for us - as a political newcomer.
During the 2017 federal election, I was in the top trio of Pirates nationwide. "Pirates. Freu' Dich aufs Neuland" was the title of our election campaign, and it focused on education, intergenerational justice, infrastructure expansion and privacy protection. Since then, I have been present in the media several times as spokesperson for digital change. Be it radio broadcasts, newspaper interviews up to Stern and Cicero or as a speaker in front of tens of thousands at the big Article 13 demos. But we better keep quiet about my singing performance ;)
In the 2019 municipal election, we Pirates managed to not only keep our seat in the city council but even improve our result compared to the 2014 election. As a city councillor, I am together in a fraction with the SPD and Die LINKE.

And Since 2022 I work as local assistant in the team of one of our EU delegates. Everything in addition to my main job as it is common for us Pirates.

 

With the Pirates, I learned what joint commitment can achieve, that politics is a very exciting and also exhausting task, and that fun should not be neglected. It is now nearly 12 years of "sailing through political hell" as we like to joke about our political engagement. I'm still glad I joined and look forward to the challenges ahead.

Hello,

I am moderating the preamble part of the coming Pirate program for the
EU 2024 elections. I have noticed that rather few comments have been
contributed and  I would like to have an overview of the situation for
the pirates in the member countries.  I aim at presenting a presentation
of who we are as pirates in the beginning,  so I would like to collect
little stories what caused you to start the party, and how your
situation is now.
