I hope this doesn't violate rule 3 -- tl;dr I am no longer leader, no longer running, and btw depression sucks but you should get help.
I would like to announce that effective immediately I am resigning my role as leader of the Pirate Party of Canada and will be passing that title to James Wilson until a replacement can be elected. I am also withdrawing from the Toronto Centre election.
I frequently write about dealing with depression, and know that it's common within our community. Frequently the teacher is far less able to listen to their own teachings, and this is the case here. Last month I asked for a month to deal with this, but I never did... I thought maybe some time away from work would make it feel better.
Depression isn't something that just goes away it's not a blue mood once in a while -- it's more like a weight that holds me down, it makes me not want to get out of bed and it impacts my every action. It's practically the same thing as a broken leg and just wishing it better is almost as silly. I can't tell other people to get help if I am not getting the proper help myself.
I hope no one feels that I am turning my back on the party, too often we have leaders who just go absent and I don't want that. I feel that I have done a lot of good for the party, and when I collect myself I will be back. In the meantime I will work on my own projects to promote literacy and a more active and direct role in protecting civil liberties.
We need people, especially young people and women who might not feel empowered to step up. If you have even the slightest urge to help I hope that you do. The Pirate Party is worth it. It's such an amazing team of people, people like Ric Lim and James Wilson (and the rest) who work very hard every day to make this party a legitimate force in Canada.
Again, I will say that if you feel "lazy" or like you don't want to get out of bed in the morning (or constantly down)... go see someone. Talk about it with your friends, it's nothing to be ashamed of.
I love this party, I love our supporters, and until I see you again: Fair Winds
