Dear Hanns-Jörg Rohwedder,
*Air pollution has become the biggest environmental health risk*with
over 7 million deaths globally and 400.000 in Europe attributed to air
pollution. The external health-related costs in Europe are in the range
of €330- 940 billion per year. Despite the existing legislative
framework and the citizens’ right to clean air in Europe, continuing
violations of air pollution limits remain a problem and threaten health,
the environment and the climate.
We invite you to discuss strategies to improve urban air quality and its
future challenges at the *“Clean Air for European Cities” Conference, 6
July 2015 at the Landesvertretung Niedersachsen, In den Ministergärten
10, 10117 Berlin.* What measures can cities take to effectively improve
their air quality? What can national and local governments do to support
them? And what is happening to the proposed Clean Air legislation
package on EU level right now?
The conference will start with a short overview of the Clean Air project
activities, followed by a *keynote from the European Commission *and a
second keynote from*Christer Ågren (AirClim)* *on air quality and
climate change*. After a coffee break there will be two panel
discussions: In Panel I representatives from *European* *best practice
cities* will discuss their clean air strategies with focus on public
transport, cycling, non-road mobile machinery and shipping. The second
Panel aims to elaborate on the *political challenges for future of urban
air quality *with representatives from the European Commission, the
German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Eurocities and ClientEarth.
After the concluding *outlook on the future of urban air quality* there
will be a *buffet and get-together *with the possibility to visit the
*exhibition presenting the project activities*.
